What is I.P.M.?

  • IPM is an effective and environmentally sensitive approach to pest management that relies on a combination of commonsense practices.
  • It is used to manage pests by the most economical means, and with the least possible hazard to people, property, and the environment.
  • IPM programs take advantage of all pest management options possibly including, but not limited to, the judicious use of pesticides.

  •     For all involved including managers, janitorial staff, residents, regular visitors
  •     Discuss responsibilities of all parties
  •     On site staff training
  •     Resident involvement is a MUST, empowering them to take an active role.
  •     The more involved, the more successful.

Bed Bug Strategies

  •     Education and Early Reporting
  •     Inspection and Monitoring
  •     Follow Up Services
  •     Pre-move in screening of tenant’s belongings
  •     Inspection of all Turn Over Units

Preparation: Things to note

  •     Most fabric items can be dried only, even on a lower dryer setting all bed bug life stages are killed
  •     All items that are taken to a laundering facility outside of the infested unit must be bagged and sealed tightly. The bags need to be disposed of immediately and NOT reused. DO NOT carry unbagged items outside the unit.
  •     Any infested furniture that is determined no longer fit for used must be removed by a professional.
  •     Encourage residents to take an active role in future prevention.

Inspection to Determine

  •     Presence of bed bugs
  •     Extent of infestation
  •     Harborage areas
  •     Conditions conducive to infestation
  •     Contact Persons to discuss findings and treatment
  •     Members of collaborative team
  •     If bed bugs are found, residents are NOT to use any chemicals to control, this can actually exacerbate the situation.
